Roles and Responsibilities of Justice and Peace Department at different levels

International – Pontifical and other commissions Worldwide.

  1. Network, collaboration and support each other through information sharing.
  2. Link with all Justice and Peace Commissions all-over the world.

Regional – SECAM AND AMECEA

  1. Network through information sharing at regional level.
  2. Links the department to other justice & peace commissions of the member countries.
  3. Capacity building to national departments of member Episcopal Conferences.
  4. Conduct joint advocacy programs.

National JPD

  1. Stimulate awareness by empowering the people and train trainers.
  2. Provide the bishop’s conference with relevant information on the different issues concerning Justice and Peace.
  3. Find possible ways of implementing the Social Teaching of the Church.
  4. Foster and promote justice and peace in the country and edify the church’s prophetic role.
  5. Network with other NGOs and CBOs to have a collective voice for Justice and Peace issues.
  6. Express solidarity with those suffering gross violations of human rights in and outside Uganda.
  7. Do research and consultations on government policies and parliamentary Bills before they are passed into law.
  8. Focus justice and peace education in church structures like diocesan leadership, religious institutions, institutions of higher learning, schools, etc.

Diocesan JPCs

  1. Prepare programs for dioceses according to the priorities noted, bearing in mind those at the national level.
  2. Form the conscious of individuals and the parish community – education programs for trainers at the grassroots.
  3. Create awareness among the clergy and religious community, lay apostolate groups, etc.
  4. Keep in touch with personalities in district and other levels.
  5. Endeavor to obtain information on specific actions of injustices and submit the findings to the diocesan bishops or relevant authorities, and also inform the Justice and Peace Department at the Catholic Secretariat.

Parish JPCs

  1. Teach Justice and Peace to all parishioners.
  2. Teach social teaching.
  3. Promote democratization right from the home.
  4. Promote reconciliation and forgiveness.
  5. Protect human rights.
  6. Promote civic education.
  7. Know the constitution and teach it to others.
  8. Disseminate information.
  9. Have action against corruption.
  10. Act in defense of the poor and the marginalized.

Sub – Parish level

  1. Justice and Peace work at these levels target the families for the family is the first school of values where a child begins learning the values of community living.   They include sharing, forgiving, reconciliation, compassion, justice, peace, tolerance, commitment, integrity, honesty, self-respect, responsibility, respect for elders, hard work, generosity, etc.
  2. Strengthen the Small Christian Communities and transform them into Justice and Peace units for activities geared towards reconciliation, unity, tolerance and the entire development of families and individuals.

Small Christian Communities

  1. Help parents to bring up their children with such values that support society.
  2. Units of reconciliation and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
  3. Channels of information from the different sources through the sub-parishes.
  4. Units of family education.
  5. Regular study, reflection and sharing of scripture and the Catholic Social Teaching.

Families

  1. Homes should help the children to grow up with justice and peace values.
  2. Where the children’s perception of the world view is shaped.
  3. The school of the Gospel where a child begin to understand the life of Jesus.
  4. Where a child is taught the importance of having a spiritual rule of life that can make them true followers and witnesses of the Gospel values and the value of hard work in homes.
  5. A domestic church with the various aspects of the entire church are expected to be found, a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which it is radiated, where parents not only communicate the Gospel to their children but from their children they can also receive the Gospel.
  6. Where the parents are expected to live by word and example, true heralds of faith with regard to their children.
